Richard created the first trading card game, Magic: The Gathering. At the time it was published he was teaching mathematics at Whitman College, but soon left academics to work in game design full-time. Since then he has designed card and board games of widely varied types, including such games as King of Tokyo, Keyforge and Creature Feature. He co-authored the textbook Characteristics of Games. He spends his time creating, thinking about and studying (playing) games.
