New Dungeons & Dragons campaign book, Mythic Odysseys of Theros, draws from Magic: The Gathering

Centaur of attention.

Update: Wizards of the Coast has officially announced the upcoming Mythic Odysseys of Theros. We've added new information below.

A new Dungeons & Dragons 5E RPG campaign setting book set in the Magic: The Gathering universe has been leaked on Amazon.

Described as a “realm shaped by the wrath of gods and the deeds of heroes” and chock full of mythic monsters and playable satyrs, Mythic Odysseys of Theros looks set to be an epic traipse indeed.

It’s based in the Greek-myth inspired world of Theros, which is the setting for collectible card game Magic: The Gathering’s recent card set Theros: Beyond Death - which explores Theros’ cosmic underworld.

The upcoming Mythic Odysseys of Theros D&D campaign and sourcebook.

As part of the new Dungeons & Dragons 5E campaign setting Mythic Odysseys of Theros, players will apparently gain access to ‘Supernatural Gifts’ that will, as the title suggests, grant remarkable powers.

New player character races for the setting include goat-legged creatures of myth the Satyr and the Leonin - a lawful lion-like race from Magic: The Gathering.

Meanwhile, new subclasses added to the Dungeons & Dragons 5E sourcebook include the Bard’s College of Eloquence and the Paladin’s Oath of Heroism.

You’ll also encounter mythic monsters; while none have been revealed yet, notable beasts from Greek mythology that make appearances in the Theros: Beyond Death MTG expansion include the many-headed Hydra, the fire-breathing Chimera and giant three-headed dog Cerberus. Some monsters inspired by Greek myth already feature in Dungeons & Dragons 5E; minotaurs and centaurs, for example, are player character races.

In addition, you’ll seemingly be able to “wield the weapons of the gods”, which include five signature artifacts used by the deities of Theros. Particularly brutal weapons from the Theros: Beyond Death card set include the smoky Shadowspear.

Last but not least, destiny and immortal schemes will lead players to unknown challenges, potentially adding your character's adventures into the pantheon of myths.

This is not the tabletop RPG’s first foray into the world of Magic: The Gathering; Dungeons & Dragons 5E sourcebook Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica was set in MTG’s worldwide cityscape Ravnica.

Mythic Odysseys of Theros is one of two revealed Dungeons & Dragons 5E campaign books due out in 2020; details of the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount setting, based on actual play series Critical Role, were revealed in January.

An alternative cover of Mythic Odysseys of Theros by artist Kevin Tong will also be released along with the standard edition.

Originally cited for release in June via the leaked Amazon page, publisher Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Magic: The Gathering-based upcoming tabletop RPG will be out on June 2nd and will retail for $49.95 (£38.36).
