Gloomhaven digital is getting DLC based on Jaws of the Lion

Including new mercenaries and missions.

The Gloomhaven digital board game is set to receive downloadable content based on the spin-off tabletop title Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion.

Announced via a tweet from the official Gloomhaven Digital Twitter account, the Jaws of the Lion DLC will provide players with new content inspired by the co-op board game. The DLC will require that players have the Gloomhaven video game – despite Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion being a standalone tabletop title – and will add four additional mercenaries for players to choose from, as well as an entirely new questline to follow. The new mercenaries include the Red Guard – a character who can protect their allies by manipulating the battlefield – the axe-throwing Hatchet, the explosive Demolitionist and the Void Warden, who can support their allies at a cost.

Alongside the new playable characters, the Jaws of the Lion will unlock another campaign that players can experience as soon as they’ve completed the digital board game‘s second scenario. Adapted from the storyline featured in the original board game, the Jaws of the Lion video game campaign sees players becoming a notorious mercenary group who is paid to investigate several disappearances happening across the city of Gloomhaven. There will be 25 scenarios included in the Jaws of the Lion campaign, with 10 new enemies to fight and 22 road events to encounter along the way.

The original Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion was released in 2020 and sees one to four players taking on the role of a team of mercenaries, with the spin-off game’s events taking place before the storyline featured in Gloomhaven. Players can control one of four different characters – which can also be used in a playthrough of Gloomhaven – in a campaign that focuses on a series of disappearances. Unlike Gloomhaven, Jaws of the Lion has players using the pages of a book for each scenario, moving their character miniatures across the pages using a more simplified ruleset.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion was created by Isaac Childres, the designer behind the original Gloomhaven and its highly anticipated sequel Frosthaven, as well as being the co-creator of Return to Dark Tower – a re-imagined version of a classic board game – and the founder of the studio behind the Gloomhaven series, Cephalofair Games.

The digital version of Gloomhaven, which was developed by Flaming Fowl Studios and published by Asmodee Digital, is a co-op video game that challenges players to complete a series of scenarios located in and around the city of Gloomhaven. Featuring the mercenaries from the tabletop original as playable characters, players select the scenarios they want to play and use their characters’ respective decks to perform two actions on their turn.

Whenever players run out of cards to use, they have to rest to regain them back, losing one in the process. Characters become exhausted when they run out of cards to use, with scenarios failing when all characters in the party have become or exhausted or been killed. Players are able to experience Gloomhaven digital on their own or with their friends online.

The Jaws of the Lion DLC for Gloomhaven digital is yet to receive a release date or retail price.
